Book Club Friday: Church Unique, Chapters 8

We’re back to our Book Club – or Nerd Club. We’re on chapter 8 of Church Unique. I skimmed it last night. I’ll give it a better look over the next couple days and expand on it. If you’ve read it and want to start the discussion, get us started…

This is the chapter I’ve most enjoyed as our vision has been defined at church. It isn’t as clear here as I was hoping, but the basic idea is helpful. The original discussion we had about clarifying vision had me fearful. I wondered which way we were going to lurch as a church. This idea of listening to those who have gone before us – thinking of their faithfulness and how they were pioneers of their time, etc... – should lead to a great humility and awe. We’re often looking forward so much that we forget to honor where we’ve been. I think this gets complicated because, as we look forward, we need to critique the past. But we have to figure out a way to critique it for today while honoring its role in getting us to where we are. I like the ways this chapter highlights ways to remember the story of what has gone before – Vision Detectors.
